Feynman’s Entropy and Decoherence Mechanism
نویسنده
چکیده
If we reduce coherence in a given quantum system, the result is an increase in entropy. Does this necessarily convert this quantum system into a classical system? The answer to this question is No. The decrease of coherence means more uncertainty. This does not seem to make the system closer to classical system where there are no uncertainties. We examine the problem using two coupled harmonic oscillators where we make observations on one of them while the other oscillator is assumed to be unobservable or to be in Feynman’s rest of the universe. Our ignorance about the rest of the universe causes an increase in entropy. However, does the system act like a classical system? The answer is again No. When and how does this system appear like a classical system? It is shown that this paradox can be resolved only if measurements are taken along the normal coordinates. It is also shown that Feynman’s parton picture is one concrete physical example of this decoherence mechanism. Typeset using REVTEX ∗electronic address: [email protected]

Is the concept of quantum probability consistent with Lorentz covariance?
Lorentz-covariant harmonic oscillator wave functions are constructed from the Lorentz-invariant oscillator differential equation of Feynman, Kislinger, and Ravndal for a two-body bound state. The wave functions are not invariant but covariant. As the differential equation contains the time-separation variable, the wave functions contain the same time-separation variable which does not exist in ...
متن کاملFeynman's Decoherence
Gell-Mann’s quarks are coherent particles confined within a hadron at rest, but Feynman’s partons are incoherent particles which constitute a hadron moving with a velocity close to that of light. It is widely believed that the quark model and the parton model are two different manifestations of the same covariant entity. If this is the case, the question arises whether the Lorentz boost destroy...
متن کاملFeynman’s decoherence via Wigner’s little groups
The 20th-century physics starts with Einstein and ends with Feynman. Einstein introduced the Lorentz-covariant world with E = mc. Feynman observed that fast-moving hadrons consist of partons which act incoherently with external signals. If quarks and partons are the same entities observed in different Lorentz frames, the question then is why partons are incoherent while quarks are coherent. Thi...
متن کاملDecoherence time and entropy production in high energy Heavy Ion Collisons
In high-energy hevy-ion collisons a sigifi cant amount of entropy can be produced merely by the decoherence of the individual nuclear multi-particle states. We argue that the time scales on which this happens are much shorter than 1 fm/c. Decoherence can therefore explain the very rapid onset of a behaviour which resembles that of a thermalised state of matter. The mechanisms responsible for th...
متن کاملInformation-entropy and the space of decoherence functions in generalised quantum theory
In standard quantum theory, the ideas of information-entropy and of pure states are closely linked. States are represented by density matrices ρ on a Hilbert space and the information-entropy −tr(ρ log ρ) is minimised on pure states (pure states are the vertices of the boundary of the convex set of states). The space of decoherence functions in the consistent histories approach to generalised q...
